Making the Difference

The Break the Cycle project is a Movement, sponsored by My Brothers Keeper Crosswalk, aims to address the intersection of addiction of parents with children and pet welfare. This initiative seeks to provide support and resources for individuals with children who are struggling with addiction, particularly those who are homeless or facing significant challenges in their lives.

What is the impact on the children when the parents are experiencing addiction?

The relationship between parental opioid addiction and children's mental health is a complex issue that can influence various aspects of a child's well-being. Research indicates several potential impacts:

1. Emotional and Behavioral Problems: Children of parents with opioid addiction may experience higher rates of emotional and behavioral issues. These can include anxiety, depression, aggression, and difficulties with emotional regulation.

2. Attachment and Relationship Issues: Parental addiction can affect the parent-child bond. Children may struggle with feelings of neglect, insecurity, or instability, which can impede the development of healthy attachment styles.

3. Increased Stress and Trauma: Living in an environment affected by substance use can expose children to stress and trauma. This exposure may manifest as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other trauma-related symptoms.

4. Disrupted Home Environment: Opioid addiction can lead to instability in the home, including inconsistent parenting, financial strain, and family conflict. These disruptions can adversely affect a child's sense of safety and predictability.

5. Impact on Development: Prolonged exposure to parental opioid addiction can impact cognitive development, academic performance, and social skills. Children may face challenges in school and social settings due to these developmental delays.

6. Potential for Intergenerational Patterns: Children of parents with substance use disorders may be at an increased risk of developing similar issues in adulthood, potentially leading to a cycle of addiction and related mental health challenges.

Through Awareness and Education, the Break the Cycle project aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals struggling with addiction, their children and their pets. By promoting understanding and compassion, the initiative seeks to foster a supportive community. Through Community Engagement: The project encourages community involvement and support, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with local organizations, shelters, and addiction recovery programs.

Overall, while not all children of parents with opioid addiction will experience negative mental health outcomes, the risks and challenges associated with such environments can significantly affect their emotional and psychological development. Access to support services, such as counseling and stable caregiving, can help mitigate some of these impacts.

THE OPIOID OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE. ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.

Opioid overdose is a serious public health concern that can lead to fatal consequences. One effective measure for preventing opioid overdose is the use of Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray, which is a safe and easy-to-administer medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

It works by displacing opioids from their receptors in the brain, restoring normal breathing in individuals experiencing an overdose. Access to Narcan is critical for those at risk of opioid overdose and their loved ones, as it can save lives in emergency situations.
